    In 1850 Columbus Major was with his parents in Harmony township, Hancock Co., IL. Sometime in the 1850's he moved to Washington township, Clarke Co. Iowa, where he became a prosperous farmer. He married Fannie A. ___ about 1864 or before. In 1870 he was living with his wife and two young sons in Washington township with a farm listed as being worth $12,000. In 1880 the family had relocated to Galena, Bear Butte Creek, Lawrence County Dakota Territory. Columbus gave his occupation as a miner at that time.

He is listed in the tax records between 1779 and 1782 at in Loudoun Co., VA.1 He married Nancy Green on 18 January 1797 at in Loudoun Co., VA; Loudoun County - Know all men by these present that we John Combs and Mahlen Combs are held and firmely bound unto his excellency James Wood Exq Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the full and just sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to which payment will and truly to be paid to one said Governor and his successors in trust for __ said Commonwelth we bind ourselves and each of our heirs Exec and Administrators jointly and severally ____ by these present sealed with our seals and dated this 18th day of Jan 1797.

The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas there is a marriage shortly intended to be had adn solomnized between the above named John Combs and nancy Vinander Weidow. Now if there shall be no lawful couse to obstruct the said intended Marriage then this obligation to be void. Else to remain in full force and virtue.
