  1. Born in a dougout in the side of a hill on the homestead in Saline Co., NE, located 5 miles south and 2 1/2 miles east of Crete. The dugout was in the side of a hill between two poplar trees and facing north.. Mary, being the oldest, learned at an early age to care for the babies in the family. In her youth mary came down with a high fever. Old Doc Conrad came every day. Mary could not wait till she heard the team of horses galloping with the carriage, anticipating the Dr will make her well. She lost all her hair and when recouperating had to learn to walk all over again.
    Mary baby sat her younger bros & sisters when her parents went out for the eve. Mary always went to the neighboring homestead and brought her grandmo11ier to stay with her. There were many Indians passing through their farm yard and mary was afriad to be alone with the smaller children. Sometimes the Indians begged for food. One day when mary's mother could not understand what the indian wanted, he began to crow like a rooster, so she ga ve him a rooster.
    In the catholic school, mary took lessons in embroillery, crocheting and fine arts with her sisters. Mary went to the catholic church wth her Grandmother. When in her teens mary wanted a new dress for the 4th of july dance. She walked 7 1/2 mi to town and bought the materia, a beaufiful white eyelet embroidery. She made the dress and went to the dance. Mary attended dances with the boys/girls from the neighborhood going in one wagon which meant standing room only. Mary never went alone with a man. She would always be accompanied by a sister or brother. She never went alone with the man she married.
    Her husband, Vclav, took four years to persuade Mary to marry him. He wanted her to go steady. But Mary said when she makes up her mind to marry, she will marry right away, but not go steady. Mary was not fully decided to marry yet. She wanted to go to work. But her father and her grandmollier said she should marry and have a home of her own.
    The preceeding info comes from Marie Stehlik Pomajzl, daughter of Vaclav and Mary Plouzek Stehlik. Except for a brief marriage to Vance Pomajzl who died in 11ie flu epidemic of 1918, Mary lived with her parents.
